Friends of Wellesley METCO

Friends of Wellesley METCO, Inc. is an independent charitable organization dedicated to helping Wellesley’s METCO students make the most of the educational opportunities provided by the METCO program.

Wellesley began its relationship with the METCO program in 1966 as one of the original seven founding districts. Soon after, a small group of Wellesley citizens began what was initially a scholarship program for graduating METCO seniors. Eventually the group expanded its fundraising mission to more fully support METCO students during their time in the school system. Through an annual appeal letter, what was then known as the "Wellesley METCO Committee", raised funds to help subsidize tutoring programs, a breakfast program, an after school program for kindergartens, and late transportation to help facilitate participation in athletic, arts, and academic programming among other initiatives. In 2008, the Wellesley METCO Committee became an established 501(c) 3 and formally changed its name to "Friends of Wellesley METCO, Inc"
